Wow, there's snow this winter that's for sure. We British are known to be able to carry on a conversation about the weather until we are blue in the face. Canadians come pretty close though (maybe it's a commonwealth thing?! hehe). There is one thing that constantly amazes me .... many Canadians are suprised and horrified everytime it starts snowing or drops below -10oC. Hellooooooo, that's the one thing any foreigner associates with Canada!!! I remember when I first arrived here in August 2003 waking up everyday getting dressed in my many layers, jeans, socks and shoes, t-shirt, hoodie. By 10am everyday I was in shorts, flip flops and t-shirt! I was expecting it to be cold. So please explain, how can people who have lived here their whole lives complain everytime winter comes around?? You would have thought you'd kinda be expecting it by now wouldn't you? If you live in Canada you're gonna spend at least four months of the year dealing with snow and ice, it's a given. Don't even get me started on the winter driving.... I guess it's easy to forget a few things during the spring - autumn months. Maybe the sun slowly zaps everyone's common sense so when winter comes everyone forgets how to be sensible when driving. I don't know. I have chosen to live here though and so I will pledge to expect and accept every year when the sun goes away and leaves fall from the trees that it will snow... potentially a lot and often and that temperatures will plummet. I encourage all Canadians and those living in Canada to pledge the same thing, maybe it will help speed up the winter months.

Ah, but Katie the beauty of an Ottawa winter is that the sun doesn't go away. It gets cold (and yes, everyone complains even though it happens EVERY YEAR!!) but at least the sun still shines and you see blue sky when the snow stops. In Vancouver on the other hand.....blah....it rotates between snow, rain, sleet and grey skies for months on end. Enjoy your beautiful snow...and tell the complainers to stick a sock in it!!
